Abetone is a well known winter and summer
holiday resort, located in the North of Tuscany, in the Appennini
mountainous chain. Altitude of the town centre is 1250 meters
a.s.l., but the highest shelters and ski stations are at 1700
meters a.s.l.. Its resident population is 712 inhabitants
(year 2000); its extension is 31,26 square kilometers.
Being a well known holiday resort at local and national level,
equipped with many hotels and tourist apartments, it is characterized
by a great difference between resident population and high
season tourist population; such situation leads to the necessity
of developing and maintaining fully operational and good level
accommodation resources.
In the area there are 22 ski lifts, that can receive 18.000
people per hour. The overall length of ski tracks is 51 kilometers
and the most of them are equipped with artificial snow machines.
On these tracks, a skier like Zeno Colò became the
champion we all know.
Abetone is also a National Natural Reservoir (584 ha, instituted
in 1977) and its territory presents extremely valuable environmental
characteristics.
The municipality of Abetone takes in great account the environment
and the utilization of renewable energy sources to provide
a sustainable development of the territory and preserve its
environmental resources.
Abundant resources exist in terms of biomass available,
both from protected forest maintenance as well as from forests
managed in the neighborhood. The potential offered by bioenergy,
combined with the significant impact from tourists flow on
heat demand, makes Abetone the ideal place to implement concrete
action in the bioenergy sector and disseminate the benefits
t the widest possible audience.
