Work package 1 « Evaluation
of biofuel resources »
The target of the WP1 is to evaluate the biofuel resources
in two regions in south of Europe. The main sources of this
biofuel are forest residue and wood industrial waste. The
methodology, used in each case, will be different. The first
case is based on the measurements of the residual biomass
carried out on site and the second on the forest industry
statistics and on a survey to the companies of the wood sector.
The selected places where the project is going to be carried
out are the region of Navarra in the north of the Spain ad
the region of Tuscany in Italy. In both places, the tasks
that are going to be done are identical.
Work package 2 « Harvesting
and handling of forest residues »
WP 2 refers to forest residue harvesting, handling and transportation.
The target of this work package is to adapt the current harvesting
and handling methods of forest residues, which are already
been used in some European north countries, to other European
southern regions, where the forests biomass use is less developed.
In this work package the following tasks will be done. The
first one is to set the necessary chain to provide the estimated
residue in the WP1. It is important to know which is the cost
derived from its utilization. This cost will determine the
feasibility of use these biomass to produce energy.
Work package 3 « Biofuel
production and distribution logistics »
WP3 refers to woody biomass (forest and other wood residues)
upgrading (drying chipping and pelletising) and wood fuels
distribution/supply to the final user.
Many of the woody residues are generated in small quantities,
dispersed or intermittently. For that purpose, it is going
to carry out a pre-feasibility study, technical and economical,
of a "stock office" in both cases Navarre and Tuscany.
The Stock offices would intent to collect the woody biomass
(non contaminated) from small producers distributed along
all the region in Navarre and Tuscany (woody agricultural
pruning residues, carpenters, small sawmill and so on). A
technical and economical assessment, including methodology,
machinery an so on, will be carried out. The creation of real
stock ofices could be a future impact of the project but is
not included on it. Also, the fuel production conditions will
be studied in Navarra and Tuscany. Both cases, wood chips
and pellets, will be studied for the different kinds of biomass
available
Work package 4 « Biofuel
utilization - heating and cooling »
WP4 refers to heating and cooling installations using solid
biofuels. In this WP four cases will be analysed:
• Case study. School heating and cooling
• Case study. Small industry / Tourist resort
• Case study. District heating and cooling
• Case study. Bioenergy supply for tourist resorts
in mountain areas.
For each case a techno economical assessment will be carried
out to establish the cost and the performance (efficiency
and emissions) of the utilisation of biofuels. The cost will
include both operating cost and investment. These parameters
will be compared with the data of other northern regions in
Europe.
Work package 5 « Biomass
heating and cooling market analysis »
In this workpackage the partners are going to carry out
a:
• Present market analysis in both studied region,
Navarre ans Italy
• Potential market and development estimation in both
studied region
• The potential socio-political benefits will be estimated
taking into account:
- environmental benefits
- rural employment
- reduction in fossil fuels consumption
- forestry maintenance and risk of fire reduction
• Potential market estimation in Southern Europe
Work package 6 « Results
communication and dissemination »
To achieve this aim different meetings and conferences are
going to hold, as.
• Presentation of the project results to the Navara
and Toscana regional authorities
• Presentation of the project results to forestry
associations and wood industry associations in both region
• Dissemination of the biofuels potential and possibilities
to citizens through BIOSOUTH web site and brochures
• EU Dissemination activities in Slovenia
• EU dissemination
• Final governmental conference where national government
representatives from southern EU-member states will be invited
• Participating in European Commission Common dissemination
activities
Work package 7 « Common dissemination
activities»
Common Dissemination Activities will only take place on
behalf of the European Commission.
• Task 1: Contribution, upon request
of the Commission, to the development of online information
systems under EC management.
• Task 2: Participation, upon request
of the Commission, at contractors’ meetings and conferences
in association with the EIE and other relevant programmes,
EU-wide exhibitions, etc.
• Task 3: Contribution, upon request
of the Commission, to the preparation of common presentation
material related to EIE actions.
